Recently, State Farm refused to pay a fire department bill for the use of the "jaws of life" to extricate an injured person from an automobile collision. State Farm's basis for the coverage denial was that the extrication was a "non-medical" expense, and thus, not covered by the injured insured's medical payments coverage.

This position leaves me to wonder what we're really paying for when we buy automobile insurance coverage. I guess State Farm and other like-insurance companies expect its injured insured to be taken to the emergency room by the wrecker towing the mangled vehicle. Maybe the emergency room doctors and staff would enjoy working outside for a change.

Folks, question your insurance agent about your policy, and be sure to read your auto insurance policies carefully!

Based on your comments I believe you have never read your policy...the medical payments coveage part of the policy. The Co. decision was correct.

Jim: Thank you for your comment. It was not my policy. Carefully reading the policy and questioning insurance agents about coverage was precisely my message.

Not everything an insurance company does is bad just because the are an insurance company. It sounds like common sense, MEDICAL COVERAGE covers injuries. Don't the citizens pay taxes to pay for the fire department, do they not pay the fire department and police to handle emergencies? I am guessing the injured person did not have coverage for damage to their car and this was an attempt to get the bill taken care of. Should someone whose home burned down expect a bill from the fire department for trying to save it?

If your "precise" message was to be sure to check your insurance policy about coverage, why the need for you senseless second paragraph?

Stick to what you do best, multiplying the settlement by 30% and taking your fees.
