Shoulder Pain Pumps May Cause Permanent Damage

A recent study shows that over 63% of of patients who use shoulder pain pumps following arthroscopic surgery develop Postarthroscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis (PAGCL). PAGCL is a very painful condition that occurs when the cartilage in the shoulder has broken down and bone is touching bone.

Pain pumps do provide relief directly to the surgery site, without the use of oral narcotics. Although, despite the benefits of pain pumps, there are also some risks.

Manufacturers of pain pumps have been aware for several years of the problems that arise when a pain pump is placed directly into the shoulder following arthroscopic surgery. It is thought that the PAGCL is most likely when the pain pump is placed directly into the joint spaces and when the pain pump uses Bupivacaine and Epinepherine.

Many attorneys, including our firm, are handling these cases. Please contact an attorney if you have been affected by a shoulder pain pump.
Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Alison De Villiers

Ohio Supreme Court Upholds Law Restricting Rights of Those Injured By Defective Products

This week, in Groch v. General Motors Corp., the Ohio Supreme Court upheld a law protecting product manufacturers from any claims where the injury occurs more than 10 years after product was delivered to the customer. This is regardless of how defective or dangerous the product is and how much injury it causes.

This decision protects those who cause harm to Ohioans with defective products and takes away the rights of those injured to have proper recourse. If the effects of a product are not known until more than 10 years after the product is placed in the market, then Ohioans have no legal recourse.

Justice Pfiefer disagreed with the majority of the Supreme Court's decision. In doing so, he wrote:
"It is a harrowing thought that the products we use today that may be ticking time bombs -- be they food additives, cell phones, automobiles -- after ten years can leave us profoundly injured with no hope of recovery against the (manufacturer). For manufacturers, the bomb stops ticking at ten years. For Ohio's consumers, once but no longer protected by the Ohio Constitution, the ticking continues."

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Alison De Villiers

Canned Green Beans and Garbanzo Beans Recalled for Possible Botulism Risk

New Era Canning Company announced an expanded nationwide product recall because of a potential Clostridium botulinum (C. botulinum) contamination to all canned green beans and garbanzo beans distributed by them over the past five years.

C. botulinum can cause botulism, a serious and sometimes fatal condition. Botulism symptoms can start anywhere from 6 hours to 2 weeks after eating contaminated food. Symptoms can include droopy eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, blurred vision and muscle weakness that moves down the body. In extreme cases botulism can cause paralysis of the breathing muscles.

To date, no illnesses have been reported to the FDA; however, they advise consumers to avoid eating any of the recalled products even if they appear normal, because of potential risk of serious illness or death.

Consumers can view a list of specific brands and codes of recalled green beans and garbanzo beans included in the recall.

Greens beans with code beginning with "00249" or "GREEN", or garbanzo beans with code beginning with "00249" or "GARB", or products with no code or absence of a code that are subject to this recall should not be opened or used, and should be disposed.

Please note: New Era Canning Company also produces private label products as well and therefore other products are included in the recall.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole
