A Cincinnati police chase ended last week when the driver fleeing from police crashed into a tree and fence and his car burst into flames.

Police had signalled to the driver to pull over, but the driver sped off. The driver eventually lost control of the vehicle and it went off the road. The driver was pronounced dead on the scene.

It is never appropriate to flee from the police, but this situation begs the questions: At what point should the police stop pursuing a suspect? At what point does the risk of injury to innocent third parties outweigh the opportunity to catch that suspect immediately?

In an update, investigators are saying that the Cincinnati Police followed proper procedure in this case.
