Truck Accident Closes Highway Over Nine Hours

A truck accident, Tuesday, on U.S. 6 had a two-mile portion of the highway closed down for nine hours after a trucker crashed and overturned his tractor-trailer. A broken utility pole and diesel fuel leak made ht situation that much worse.

The accident happened at about 8:15am on US 6 between Ohio 2 and Ohio 269. Troopers were unable to reopen the highway until 5:00pm.

The driver of the semi-truck is a 64-year-old, South Bend man. He was traveling east on US 6 going 45 mph when he failed to negotiate a curve which caused the semi truck to rollover, sliding off the right side of the road, taking with it a traffic control sign and a utility pole connected to an electrical transformer.

The driver did not show signs of intoxication at the scene and he was wearing his seatbelt when the accident happened. He was transported to Firelands Regional Medical Center and treated for facial lacerations and minor bumps and bruises. He was released the same afternoon.

Troopers called in Ohio Edison and Spill Tek to clean up the power lines and fluid leaking from the damaged electrical transformer. The truck's saddle tanks were also damaged, causing them to leak 10-20 gallons of diesel fuel onto the street.

"Ten to 20 gallons is not that much, especially when (the tanks) carry 200 gallons," said Sgt. Michael Knoll of the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Sandusky post.

The truck driver was cited for failure to maintain reasonable control of a vehicle. The maximum penalty for failure to control is $150 plus court fees.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Christina Cole

Man Working on Truck Killed

Kenneth T. Clowes, 49, an Athens County man, was pinned and killed under a dump truck bed yesterday, said the Sheriffs Office.

Clowes was welding under the bed of a dump truck that had been separated from the chassis, when the dumper section fell on top of him. Chauncey firefighters and Southeast Emergency Medics helped to get Clowes out from underneath the bed. The coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.

Deputies say Clowes had braced the dump truck bed on the side of his work truck but it slid off, trapping him beneath. At this time it is unclear if Clowes was working for a company or on his own. There is no further information about the accident at this time.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Christina Cole

Tanker Truck Crash Closes Highway

A tanker truck crashed while transporting 6,000 gallons of hazardous chemicals at approximately 5am on Monday on Ohio 18 just west of Hartland Center Road.

The east-west highway was closed down until 3pm, said a spokeswoman for the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Other than fuel, none of the hazardous chemicals were released into the atmosphere, said Fire Chief Bob Johannsen.

Two commercial trucks were involved in the crash, said a dispatcher from the Norwalk Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The drivers, Ronald W. Buchholz and Melissa Keller, were transported to Fisher-Titus Medical Center for treatment. Injuries were unknown.

Buccholz was driving a 2007 International tanker truck from Toledo to Medina, said Highway Patrol. The tanker truck was carrying two extremely flammable chemicals - xylene and tolulene - said Johannsen.

Keller was driving a 2000 Volvo conventional dump truck east, with Buchholz behind the tanker, according to patrol.
When Keller turned into the driveway, Buchholz attempted to pass in the other lane. The tanker hit the dump truck, which drove off the left side of the road into a ditch. The tanker parked car and a tree.

Volunteer firefighters were called to the scene of an accident with an entrapped driver and a tanker full of hazardous chemicals. They arrived thankful to find diesel fuel had spilled, but the more volatile chemicals remained in the tank, Johannsen said.

Also, the drivers did not appear to be injured seriously, said Johannsen. Firefighters used a mechanical device to open the truck cab and remove Buchholz from the wreck, Johannsen said.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Christina Cole
